Make a Five-Color Swatch Strip Before You Start Coloring

Spring Tea Time cover with flowers and tableware beside interior line-art previews

Before coloring, make five labeled swatches on scrap paper. Each has one job: base for the broad, quiet area; main for the subject you want noticed first; support to connect repeated details; dark for a few deep boundaries; and accent for a small point of attention. The page decides which shapes get each role.

RoleExample swatchWhere it can work
Base Soft creamA large cup or open area
Main Berry redStrawberries or the leading subject
Support Leaf greenLeaves and repeated small details
Dark Cocoa brownSelected shadow spaces or deep edges
Accent Soft roseA flower or another small detail

Try the roles on a real page

The Strawberry Garden Hedgehog sample shows a hedgehog in a flowered hat among strawberries, leaves, a cup, and flowers. One possible palette is cream for the large cup, berry red for the fruit, leaf green for repeated foliage, cocoa for a few darker spaces, and soft rose for tiny flowers. Those are suggestions to compare on your page, not colors printed in the sample.

Try these five color roles on a Strawberry Garden Hedgehog sample page.

Check the choices before you begin

  1. Fill the five boxes with colors you already own and label each role.
  2. Place the swatches for touching shapes side by side. If two neighbors look too similar, lighten one or deepen the other.
  3. Keep the accent limited to a detail you want noticed. Let repeated shapes reuse the base, main, or support instead of adding a sixth color.

One strip for all five free hedgehog pages

The same hedgehog wears the same flowered hat on all five pages. That makes the sample a good place to keep one strip for a whole set instead of starting again on every page.

  • Keep the character swatches fixed: give the hat, its flower and the hedgehog the same swatches on every page. The character then reads as one hedgehog across the set.
  • Change only the base: the pages move from a strawberry-patterned teacup to a wheelbarrow of strawberries by a picket fence, a tree-stump house with a watering can, a leaf boat on a lily-pad pond and a pie stall under an awning. Pick a new base for each setting and keep the rest of the strip.
  • Keep the accent small: strawberries appear on all five pages. If berry red is your main, give the accent to one other small detail, such as the flower on the hat.
