How to Print Coloring Pages at Home

A clean coloring-page print starts with three matches: the correct source file, the correct paper size, and a sheet your printer is designed to feed. Do not begin by printing the whole book. Save the original download, open one representative page in a PDF reader, check the preview, and make one test copy.

The five-minute version

Download the original files from Etsy and extract the ZIP if the listing supplies one.
Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Select the correct paper size and orientation.
Choose Actual size when the file and sheet match; choose Fit if the preview clips the border.
Print one page, one-sided, and test the coloring tool before printing the rest.

Coloring Nest sells digital coloring files through Etsy. We do not supply the printer, paper, ink, toner, or coloring tools, and we have not physically tested every combination. Your printer manual and paper packaging control where their instructions differ from this general workflow.

1. Download the original Etsy files

For an Etsy account purchase, Etsy directs buyers to Your account > Purchases > Download Files. For a guest purchase, the receipt email contains the download link. Etsy currently says digital purchases cannot be downloaded through its app, so use a computer or a mobile web browser if the button is missing in the app.

Read the listing’s “digital file type(s)” and included-file description before purchase.
Wait for payment confirmation if the download button is still unavailable.
Save the original PDF or ZIP in a named folder rather than printing directly from an email preview.
If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it before trying to open the PDF inside.
Keep the original unchanged. Make a separate working copy only if you need to organize permitted pages.

If a download appears corrupt, Etsy recommends deleting it and downloading it again. Contact the Etsy seller through your order if the file still will not open.

2. Confirm the page and paper sizes

US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches; A4 measures 210 × 297 millimeters. They are similar but not identical. Check the product listing and file information to learn which version you received, then select the same size in the printer dialog when that paper is available.

Also check orientation. A portrait page is taller than it is wide; a landscape page is wider than it is tall. Adobe Reader provides an Auto Portrait/Landscape option, but the on-screen preview is still the final check before sending the job.

3. Understand Actual size and Fit

Adobe defines Actual size as printing without scaling. If part of the page lies outside the printer’s printable area, it can be cropped. Adobe defines Fit as reducing or enlarging the page to fit the printable area of the selected paper.

Use Actual size when accurate scale matters, the PDF matches the sheet, and the preview shows complete margins.
Use Fit when the preview shows a missing outer edge or when Letter and A4 do not match.
Use Custom Scale only when you intentionally want a specific reduction or enlargement.
Avoid Multiple unless you deliberately want several reduced pages on one sheet.

Do not judge scale from the PDF’s screen zoom. A page displayed at 75% or 125% can still print at Actual size; the setting that matters is in the print dialog.

4. Choose paper from the printer manual and the coloring tool

Begin with paper your exact printer supports. Search its manual for accepted sizes, types, weight or thickness, feed source, loading capacity, and media setting. A recommendation that works for another printer can still jam or misfeed in yours.

These are starting categories, not guaranteed specifications. For alcohol markers, Copic says its dye ink soaks into paper and recommends a scrap sheet underneath. 5. Load the paper correctly

Paper paths differ. Some printers accept ordinary paper from a cassette but require heavy stock in a rear or manual feed; some support only one heavy sheet at a time. Epson’s own support pages publish different limits for different models, which is why a brand name alone is not enough.

Confirm which side of the paper is printable, if the packaging identifies one.
Square the stack and move the edge guides against it without bending the sheets.
Use the tray or feed slot specified for that paper type.
Respect the published loading capacity; use one sheet when the manual says one.
Select the matching paper or media type in the printer driver.

If a heavy sheet does not feed cleanly, cancel the job and return to the manual. Repeatedly forcing the same unsupported setup can waste paper and create a harder jam.

6. Print one representative page

Choose a page that includes an outer border, broad black lines, and some fine details. It will reveal more than a very simple title page.

In Adobe Reader, choose Current page rather than All.
Select black-and-white or grayscale output if the file is black line art and your printer presents that option.
Choose the correct size, orientation, scaling, paper source, and media type.
Inspect every edge in the preview.
Print one-sided at the printer maker’s normal-quality starting setting.
Check the outer border, faces, whiskers, flowers, and other thin features for completeness.
Test the planned coloring tool on that paper, with a protective sheet underneath when needed.

Only print the remaining range after the page passes both the print check and the coloring-tool check.

7. Print selected pages instead of the whole book

Adobe Reader accepts individual page numbers and ranges, such as 1, 4, 8-12. Use the PDF’s displayed page numbers and verify the thumbnails before printing. Selecting only the pages you plan to use reduces setup mistakes and lets you mix difficulty levels for a short session, trip, or classroom packet.

Print one-sided when using markers, wet media, or firm pressure. Even when the reverse is blank, use a backing sheet to protect the next page and the table.

Common printing problems

The border is clipped

Confirm the selected paper size and orientation. Compare the preview with Fit instead of Actual size. Many printers cannot place ink all the way to every physical edge.

The page is unexpectedly small

Check whether Multiple, Booklet, or a custom scale was left active from an earlier job. Return to Size and compare Actual size with Fit.

The lines are pale or broken

Turn off draft or economy mode for the test, verify the paper/media setting, and follow the printer maker’s ink, toner, nozzle-check, or maintenance instructions if ordinary documents are also affected.

The page prints sideways

Use the orientation shown in the PDF and preview. Auto Portrait/Landscape can help, but confirm the result visually before printing.

The paper curls or jams

Stop the job. Check supported paper, the correct feed path, loading capacity, curl, and media setting. Follow the exact model’s jam-removal instructions; do not pull against the documented direction.

Marker ink feathers or transfers

Keep the page one-sided and protect the surface below. Test lighter passes or another printer-compatible paper. No generic paper weight guarantees the same result with every marker and technique.

The Etsy file is not visible in the app

Etsy says digital purchases currently need to be downloaded from a computer or mobile browser. Sign in on Etsy.com and open Purchases, or use the link in a guest receipt email.

Before a classroom or event print run

Confirm the product’s permitted use on the listing and the Coloring Nest licensing page.
Count participants and select only the page range needed.
Make one complete sample packet, including any trimming or binding.
Test the actual crayons, pencils, or markers that will be provided.
Allow spare sheets for misfeeds and last-minute participants.
Keep the unmodified source file so a permitted page can be printed again later.
