How to Print Coloring Pages From a Mac Using Preview

Open the coloring page itself in Preview. If it is a single image or a one-page PDF, choose File > Print. If the page sits inside a longer PDF, choose View > Thumbnails, Command-click that page’s thumbnail, choose File > Print, and select Selection in Preview. Use Auto Rotate only when you want Preview to rotate the page automatically, and use Show Notes only when visible PDF notes belong on your personal printout. Then click Print.

We keep this route focused on one coloring page for one person. The useful sequence is source first, page selection second when needed, then the few Preview controls that can change what reaches the printer.

Open the Artwork, Not the Screen Around It

Go to Preview on your Mac and open the intended PDF or image. The artwork itself should be the open item, rather than the shop page, download screen, message, or folder that led you to it. This makes File > Print act on the coloring item you chose instead of the surrounding screen.

Send One Open Page Straight to Print

Use the direct route when Preview contains only the coloring page you intend to print. That may be a single image or a PDF containing one page. Choose File > Print and let the print dialog open. You do not need the thumbnail sidebar when there is no other page to separate from the item in front of you.

Keep the source decision finished as you enter the dialog. The remaining controls should answer specific questions about this page, not send you back through the shop or download path. For a one-page item, move directly to Auto Rotate and Show Notes only if either control is relevant.

Select One Page From a Longer PDF

Apple’s current Preview instructions place PDF page selection before File > Print. With the PDF open, choose View > Thumbnails. Find the coloring page you want in the sidebar and Command-click its thumbnail. Keep that single thumbnail selected as you open File > Print.

The sidebar keeps the neighboring thumbnails visible, making the chosen page easier to distinguish before you enter the dialog.

In the print dialog, select Selection in Preview. The thumbnail identifies the page; Selection in Preview tells the dialog to use that choice. We think of these as one paired action rather than two unrelated settings: choose the artwork in the document view, then carry that choice into Print with the named option.

This route keeps the content decision visible before the dialog takes over the screen. The selected thumbnail stays at the heart of the task, and the named option carries that artwork choice forward. One chosen coloring page now has a clear path from its PDF thumbnail to the printer.

Ask Auto Rotate About Direction Only

In the Preview section of the print dialog, Auto Rotate allows Preview to rotate the image or page automatically so it fills as much of the paper as possible. Select it when that automatic turn suits the artwork in front of you. Leave it clear when you want the current direction to stay as it is.

Treat this as a single direction choice. Auto Rotate does not choose the source file, replace the selected PDF thumbnail, or decide whether notes appear. Those choices already have their own places in the route. Ask whether Preview should rotate this page automatically, make that choice, and move on.

Decide Whether Visible Notes Belong

For a PDF with notes visible in its window, Show Notes in the Preview section includes those notes in the printout. Look at the open coloring page before entering the dialog. If a visible note belongs on your personal copy, select Show Notes. If you want the artwork without that note, leave the option clear.

We like to keep notes as a separate yes-or-no choice because they have nothing to do with rotation or thumbnail selection. A page can keep its current direction and include a note, or rotate automatically without including one. Read the two labels for their own jobs instead of treating nearby controls as a group.

When no notes are visible in the PDF window, leave Show Notes alone. The page choice you made in the sidebar remains the center of the print route.

Mac Preview Checklist for One Coloring Page

These controls belong to the Mac route. If the coloring item is open on an iPhone or iPad or an Android phone, use the route whose labels match that screen.

• Open the intended PDF or image in Preview.
• For a single image or one-page PDF, choose File > Print.
• For one page inside a longer PDF, choose View > Thumbnails and Command-click its thumbnail.
• Choose File > Print, then select Selection in Preview for that thumbnail.
• Set Auto Rotate and Show Notes only for the jobs named on those controls.
• Click Print.
